Our Philosophy
There is a natural human tendency to relive and enhance fond memories and past positive experiences. Have you purchased a sweater with your college logo on it? Our first loves are not with people but things. Does a song when you hear it evoke certain feelings? Does it take you back in time? The songs we love become woven into a tapestry entwined with the people, experiences, and locations throughout our lifespan. Connecting with songs is to make a psychological and emotional association between people and experiences.
Simply put, at Wavelength Antiques, we provide connections to the past through the association of objects and music.
Radios are one such object. They have been prominently featured as both centerpieces of family gatherings and a gateway to the outside world. Think about all the world-changing events that passed through these devices. Sadly, traditional airway radio broadcasts are quickly fading away into history, and radios are becoming relics of a bygone technology. We see radios as important historical artifacts. Through the advent of the global internet and Bluetooth technology, these resurrected pieces can now proudly play sounds of the world as they once did.
At Wavelength Antiques, we specialize in rescuing “farm-fresh,” non-functional vintage radios by bringing them back to life by refurbishing and re-purposing them into beautiful Bluetooth enabled devices. This allows you to play such things as streaming music services like Spotify and Pandora, Podcasts, and Audiobooks right from your smartphone, laptop, or tablet on an authentic vintage radio.
All the radios have unique looks, colors, and sizes. We offer radios/speakers from the roaring ‘20s, the art deco period of the 1930’s/40’s, mid-century modern radios from the 1950’s/60’s, space-age radios from the 1970s, and boomboxes of the 1980s.
It is a surreal and transformational audio experience when you listen to period-correct music on an authentic vintage radio. The experience literally takes people back in time.
See Us in Person.
If you are in the NYC area, come see us in person! We will be making appearances at various flea markets and craft shows throughout the city. Check our home page for the date and location of our next appearance.
What else do you have?
We also offer a collection of classic vintage technologies. These can range from fully functional AM/FM radios, vintage cameras, and clocks, as well as our own “Up-cycled” creations.
What's the process behind the radio's transformation?
Dating the Radios.
We date the year of the radio using the information contained within the radiomuseum.org website.
The Case.
The radio case is inspected for imperfections and thoroughly cleaned and polished. Scratches and scuffs are removed as much as possible, and cracks (if they exist) are repaired to the point where they are barely noticeable. Since these radios are anywhere between 30 and 95 years old, you should expect to see some imperfections. We try to describe the radios as accurately as possible. The pictures all in high resolution; please inspect them carefully. If you have any questions about the condition of a radio, please ask.
The Speaker(s).
Every effort is made to preserve the original speaker, as that is what we believe to be the radio’s soul and what gives the radio its unique character. In some cases, the original speaker is either non-existent or damaged beyond repair. If this should happen, a similar vintage or modern speaker will be used in its place. This will be noted in the radio’s description.
Power Cords.
The radio’s power cord is replaced with a modern 12 volt or USB power source in all cases. This power source is then directly tied to the radio’s own on/off switch. Sometimes the radio’s on/off switch cannot be used. In this case, an alternative power switch will be provided in a separate location. This will be noted in the radio’s description.
Bluetooth and Illumination.
A Bluetooth receiver and amplifier board are secured inside the radio and connected to the power source and speaker(s). In some radios, LED lights are substituted for the radio’s original light bulb. These LED lights drain less power, are brighter than the original, and last for decades. Some radios are illuminated with LED lights, which were not part of the original radio architecture. A description of the radio’s lighting scheme will be noted in the description.
